The check-in process tells the airline that the passenger has completed the final step before taking their flight. During this process, the airline registers passengers and assigns their seats on the aircraft; baggage is also checked in where applicable.

It can be completed in person at the airport or online, known as web check-in or online check-in.

When you arrive at Valencia Airport, go to the check-in area in the Departures hall on floor P1 and check the screens for the check-in desk assigned to your airline. At the desk, give the airline staff your documents and/or passport, your ticket or booking reference, which consists of six numbers or letters and is provided when you make the booking.

Once check-in is complete, you will receive your boarding pass, which shows the boarding area and gate, and the receipt for your checked baggage. If the boarding gate has not yet been assigned, it will appear on the information screens as your flight departure time approaches. Watch the screens for possible last-minute changes to the boarding gate or flight departure time. Do not hesitate to ask the staff at the check-in desks if you have any questions.

Next, to access the boarding areas, which are reserved exclusively for passengers, go to the security screening and control point in the Departures hall on floor 1, between terminals T1 and T2.

Make sure you do not carry liquids, gels, drinks, cans or soft drinks that are open or unsealed, as they may be refused at security. See the rules for hand luggage.

Once you have passed the security checks, go to your boarding gate.

Online check-in

To avoid queues when checking in at the airport, many airlines allow you to complete online check-in beforehand from home, the office or a mobile device. If you could not do so beforehand, some airlines have installed self-service check-in machines at the airport (Iberia and Air Nostrum).

It can be completed 24-48 hours before the flight and up to two hours before departure. This system lets you confirm that you will take the flight, pre-pay for excess baggage and, in many cases, choose your seat on the aircraft.

If you expect to exceed your baggage allowance, many airlines let you pre-pay for excess baggage during online check-in. Fares are lower during this process than at airport desks.

How does online check-in work?

Visit your airline’s website and look for the check-in area. Enter the flight code or booking reference and the passenger’s surname. Then follow the airline’s instructions to complete online check-in. You can print your boarding pass, which contains the flight and passenger information and is essential for boarding the aircraft.
If the airline allows it and your mobile phone has an internet connection, you can also receive this information on your phone as a TEM.

TEM mobile boarding pass

The TEM mobile boarding pass is an image containing a 2D code with all essential flight and passenger details. If the passenger does not need to check in baggage, on arrival at the airport they can go directly to the security checkpoint closest to their boarding area.

Flight-Cruise - Combined check-in

On some occasions, certain airlines operate a combined Port-Airport check-in service. It gives cruise passengers arriving in Valencia by air and travelling on a cruise the opportunity to check their bags in directly at the airport so they are transported to the Port of Valencia (or vice versa). Ask your airline about this service.

Security and passport checks

The single security checkpoint is located in the Departures hall on floor 1, between terminals T1 and T2.

As a security measure, all passengers must pass through the security checkpoint before entering the boarding area and, on some occasions, before boarding the aircraft. This is a standard process at all airports and involves walking through a metal detector arch. Security staff may also ask you to remove your shoes and bulky garments or items that cannot be visually inspected, such as coats, parkas and hooded jumpers.

Hand luggage and everything you carry with you will be checked by an X-ray machine. Staff will ask you to place your belongings in the trays provided. Laptops and tablets must be removed from their carrying cases. Device batteries must have enough charge for the device to be switched on.

Many items are lost or forgotten in the security area. Do not rush away from this area and check that you have collected every item you put in the trays.
